May has been another great month for my side hustles! As the summer season kicks off, some of my hustles are starting to show even stronger results, while others are still in a period of slower growth. But overall, I’m seeing positive momentum and an increase in income across the board.
Welcome back to the Financial Tutor Side Hustle Report! If you're new here, I’ve been documenting my side hustle earnings since 2021. Each month, I break down what I earned, the ups and downs, and how you can replicate this journey. Let’s dive into how my May 2024 went!
Side Hustle Income for May 2024
Wag (Dog Walking): $0.00
Amazon Video Review Commissions: $1,377.81
ShareGrid (Camera Rental): $0.00
Podcast: $2.58
Consulting Calls: $0.00
House Hack: Free Housing
Airbnb/VRBO (Short-Term Rental Income): $3,419.18
Monthly Interest: $485.09
Total Side Hustle Income for May 2024 = $5,284.66
May’s income is a significant jump from previous months, with Amazon video reviews and Airbnb taking the lead. While some side hustles, like Wag and ShareGrid, didn’t contribute this month, I’m focusing on scaling the ones that are bringing in strong earnings.
Wag: $0.00
No dog walking this month. Between other commitments and the warmer weather, I didn’t find the time to pursue Wag. I’ll revisit this hustle when my schedule allows, especially as demand tends to pick up in the summer.
Amazon Video Review Commissions: $1,377.81
Amazon video reviews continue to be a major source of income, bringing in $1,377.81 this month. I’m honing my strategy to focus on high-traffic product categories, and the results are showing. I plan to keep scaling this hustle by increasing my volume of reviews and targeting popular products.
ShareGrid (Camera Rental): $0.00
No camera rentals this month. I’m still hoping to see more demand as wedding season picks up, and I’ll continue to market my gear on ShareGrid to attract bookings. It’s a bit slow for now, but I remain hopeful.
Podcast: $2.58
My podcast earned $2.58 in May. While the earnings are modest, any increase is a step forward. I’m working on expanding my listener base and improving the content. The goal is to build consistency and grow this hustle over time.
House Hack: Free Housing
House hacking remains a great strategy for minimizing living costs. By living in one unit for free, I’m able to offset the expenses of the building. The upstairs unit is rented out long-term, and the garden unit is used for short-term Airbnb rentals. This setup continues to help me reduce my living expenses while earning additional income.
Airbnb/VRBO (Short-Term Rental Income): $3,419.18
Short-term rental income continues to be strong this month. I earned $4,356.00 from Airbnb and VRBO, but after accounting for building expenses, the net income for May came to $3,419.18. The busy summer season is helping keep my occupancy rates up, and I’m focusing on optimizing my listings to make the most of this high-demand period.
Building Expenses:
Monthly mortgage payment (including interest): $2,116.07
Home insurance: $151.96
Property taxes: $542.44
Total monthly expenses: $2,810.47
Since the building has three units, the Airbnb portion of these expenses is $936.82 per month.
Net Airbnb Income for May:$4,356.00 - $936.82 = $3,419.18
This is the actual profit for the month after covering the building’s share of the expenses.
Interest Earnings (Robinhood): $485.09
This month, I earned $485.09 in interest on funds in my Robinhood account. While I’m still deciding where to invest this money, it’s great to see consistent returns. It’s a good reminder that even when funds are sitting, they can be growing in the background.
And that concludes the May Side Hustle Report.
May has been an excellent month with total side hustle earnings of $5,284.66. Amazon video reviews and Airbnb are leading the charge, and I’m excited to see these streams growing. My podcast is also showing potential for future growth, and I’m keeping an eye on any new opportunities that may arise.
Looking ahead to June, I plan to continue focusing on optimizing the hustles that are bringing in the most income. I’ll also keep exploring other potential side hustles to diversify my income even further. The goal is to maintain this momentum and keep pushing forward in 2024.
