It’s hard to believe we’ve already leaped into 2024! The post-holiday hustle is real, and as the New Year unfolds, some side hustles are picking up steam while others are catching their breath (for now).
Welcome back to another edition of the Financial Tutor Side Hustle Report! If you’re new here, let me catch you up: every month, I dive deep into the income I’ve earned through gig and sharing economy apps. I've been documenting this journey since 2021, which means I have over four years’ worth of side hustle data, trends, and lessons to share. Through trial, error, and spreadsheets (so many spreadsheets), I’ve figured out what works, and I’m here to help you replicate these results to start earning yourself.
Today, I’ll share what I earned in January 2024. Let’s take a closer look at the breakdown.
Side Hustle Income for January 2024
Wag (Dog Walking): $0.00
Amazon Video Review Commissions: $1,546.77
ShareGrid (Camera Rental): $0.00
Podcast: $2.80
Co-Hosting: $0.00
Consulting Calls: $0.00
House Hack: Free Housing
Airbnb/VRBO (Short-Term Rental Income): $772.18
Monthly Interest: $315.43
Total Side Hustle Income for January 2024 = $2,637.18
Not a bad way to kick off the year! Two side hustles drove most of the total income, and I’m still exploring new opportunities to expand these streams.
Now, let’s dig into the details.
Wag: $0.00
No dog-walking this month. With the colder weather and competing priorities, Wag took a backseat for now. I’ll look to get back into it as the weather improves and my schedule opens up.
Amazon Video Review Commissions: $1,546.77
My Amazon video reviews did well this month, earning a solid $1,546.77. This is a great improvement from previous months, and I'm happy to see the growth. I’ll keep optimizing my strategy and focus on high-traffic product categories to maintain this momentum.
ShareGrid (Camera Rental): $0.00
No camera rentals this month. ShareGrid can be unpredictable, but I’m staying optimistic about the potential. As wedding season approaches, I’ll plan to push rentals again and see if there’s an uptick in demand.
Podcast: $2.80
My podcast earned a modest $2.80 in January. While the income is small, it's progress. The goal is to grow the audience and eventually see more consistent earnings. I’m focused on improving the content and expanding my listener base in the coming months.
House Hack: Free Housing
House hacking continues to be a solid strategy for reducing living costs. I live in one unit for free, which significantly offsets my living expenses. The upstairs unit is rented out long-term, and the garden unit is used for my short-term Airbnb business, keeping my living costs low while earning income.
Airbnb/VRBO (Short-Term Rental Income): $1,709.00
Short-term rental income remained steady this month, bringing in $1,709.00. The winter months can be slower for Airbnb, but I’ve managed to maintain a decent occupancy rate. This hustle continues to be a reliable source of income, and I’m working on optimizing my listings for the upcoming seasons.
Building Expenses:
Monthly mortgage payment (including interest): $2,116.07
Home insurance: $151.96
Property taxes: $542.44
This brings the total monthly expenses to $2,810.47. Since the building has three units, the Airbnb portion of these expenses comes to $936.82 per month.
Net Airbnb Income for January: $1,709.00 - $936.82 = $772.18
This amount represents the actual profit for the month after covering the Airbnb’s share of the building's expenses.
Interest Earnings (Robinhood): $315.43
I earned $315.43 in interest on funds held in my Robinhood account. While I continue to decide where to allocate this money for investment, it’s nice to see some returns coming in. This serves as a reminder that even idle funds can be put to work, growing steadily in the background.
And that concludes the January Side Hustle Report.
January was a solid start to the year with total earnings of $3,574.00. Some hustles are performing better than others, but I’m optimistic about the direction I’m heading. I’ll continue refining my approach to maximize each hustle and stay adaptable to new opportunities.
As we move into the year, I’m excited to continue growing my side hustles. From Amazon video reviews to short-term rentals, there’s plenty of room for growth. I’ll also look for ways to get back into Wag and expand my podcast audience.
One of my big goals for 2024 is to test at least 10 new side hustles and see which ones can generate consistent income. There’s always room to explore, tweak, and scale.
